The Case for Case Management

In today's already hectic and harried society an increasing number of children are being diagnosed with educational and developmental needs. With this trend, a heartfelt service industry has blossomed to support these children and their families.

Parents find themselves navigating this industry, trying to make the best decisions for their children regarding who will provide the most professional and knowledgeable service.

Many children have no less than six different service providers at one given time including therapists, educators, tutors, and other support personnel.

Within this group of unique, unrelated professionals, parents find a variety of personality types, assessment formats, treatment goals, and methodologies.

Many parents express their desire to "get everyone in the same room", but struggle with their own schedule, much less organizing a meeting or even a group e-mail.

A professional Case Manager can turn individual practitioners into a treatment team with a single purpose in mind, a child's growth and development. They keep a file on hand of all recent assessments and an overview of current progress. this allows for any new practitioner that is contracted to be quickly updated on a child's progress and needs. They play the role of advocate on behalf of a child and their parent with service providers when the need arises.

Practitioners often feel more comfortable expressing thoughts and concerns to an allied professional who can then assist in presenting the information to a parent. Increased communication ensures that parents build more trusting relationships with the practitioners and professionals that services to their child.
